Ken died Tuesday night after a sometimes tough battle with Parkinson’s disease.
I’ll remember Ken as an absent-minded professor type who was always happy and jovial and could always be counted on to know the latest sports scores…especially golf! He had a long career as a geologist and professor at FSU in which he devised and improved upon dating of water through the examination of naturally occurring radio isotopes and tortured many students in the finer points of crystallography and mineralogy. The last few years he had been working on a theory which if true would show how the prevailing interpretation of the U-series disequilibria in mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB) had violated mass balance principles.
Ken (or grandpa doggies, as Devon referred to him as) spent the last several years as assistant dog wrangler for Julie’s Big Dog Rescue operation. He always seemed willing to accept another foster dog into the home to be nurtured and rehabilitated and could be counted on to send the dogs away with a well developed skill set of ball and Frisbee retrieval.
Below are a few pictures of Ken taken over the last few years:

We took Devon to the Pumpkin Patch last night to pick out some pumpkins and take a few pictures. Here are a few that I thought were cute.

We met Manda & Quinn and Lincoln & Melissa this morning at Bruegger’s and then went to Winthrup Park to let the kids play. Manda & Quinn came up for the weekend for a conference and the ball game. I took around 200 shots, but thinned it down a bit.

For many years now Sarah has been using this recipe that we found in Salon . We were in a panic today when we couldn’t find the recipe in our recipe binder. Luckily, it was still online. Our sauce of choice starts with a basic marinara and we add chianti, Fini basalmic vineger, sugar, salt, sometimes minced garlic, oregano, and whatever else it seems to need. We throw it in the crock pot and let it cook for 5-6 hours with the meatballs. Sometimes we serve it over rigatoni, sometimes linguine.
Â
Micucci Meatballs (yields 18-22 meatballs)1 pound lean hamburger (not extra-lean)
1 cup bread crumbs
2 eggs
1/4 cup grated Romano cheese
1-2 teaspoons milk (more as needed to achieve a loosely-textured mixture)
1 teaspoon olive oil
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon minced garlic
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 clove of garlic
Olive oil for frying
2 to 3 quarts of marinara sauce (your choice, but should be thin enough to withstand up to an hour of simmering)Â 1. Mix all ingredients in a large bowl, using a wooden spoon or gently kneading with your hands. Form silver dollar-size balls very gently with your hands.2. Put about 1/4 inch of oil in a large skillet over medium high heat, adding a clove of garlic and just one or two red pepper flakes. When oil is hot, slide the meatballs into the pan with a spatula.3. Turn the meatballs carefully so they are browned and crisp on all sides, but still slightly red in the center (for any fried meatballs that will be eaten without sauce, keep cooking until the center is brown). Place meatballs (leave garlic clove and pepper flakes behind) in marinara sauce and simmer for 30 to 60 minutes.

Over the last several months, I’ve been building several sites for other people and decided it was time to treat myself. We started devonwilson.com to put up some photos of Devon both for us as a quick and easy photo album, but also for family and friends who might want to check in on him. This new site will hopefully provide a better and easier way to navigate around and see how Devon and his family are doing.
I’m going to do my best to keep both the Gallery and the blog updated. Please check back in often and feel free to flick my ear if I have been slacking in the updates department. I’ll continue to keep matthewblog.com for my political ranting and of course ThatcherMathias.com for our business.
